Ukraine: Kiev, day one

When we arrived at the airport, Jay, Marcia, and a taxi driver named Igor, met us there.  Igor drove us to their apartment so we could drop off our luggage, eat lunch, freshen up, and start enjoying Kiev.  Marcia made a delicious lunch of potato salad, orange jello with cabbage and carrots, borscht (Russian stew), and bread.  They have a great apartment next to the temple and we're so excited to see them!
Kyiv, Ukraine Temple

After lunch, we walked down the street to catch the bus to Pyrohiv (Pirogovo), originally a village south of Kiev.  It is now home to 370 acres of an outdoor Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine.  It is known for its windmills, thatched roof houses, and big painted eggs all over the the fields.  Founded in 1969, the museum contains over 300 pieces of folk architecture brought here from all parts of Ukraine and carefully reassembled.  The picturesque hill with several windmills is the museum centerpiece and the entire territory of the museum is divided into sectors, each representing the folk architecture and life of a specific Ukrainian region.

The oldest church is Naddnipryanska, built in 1742.  In the museum you can also find more than 40,000 items of household and traditional culture such as costumes, old textiles, embroidery, carpets, ceramics, metal handicrafts, woodwork and glass-ware as well as musical instruments, paintings and housewares.  Commoner's homes and old wooden village churches contain authentic items that represent the everyday lifestyle of Ukrainian villagers and townsfolk.  Local volunteers and modern Ukrainian artisans sell their wares and dress in old-style clothes and demonstrate the use of authentic everyday items to visitors.

We arrived there just a couple of hours before it closed so there weren't many costumed volunteers or demonstrations but we enjoyed just wandering through the plantation and looking at all of the great buildings.
I love these hand-painted eggs.  Each one is so different, pretty, and unique.

After touring Pyrohiv, we headed back to the apartment to relax and go to bed early for our next big day touring Kyiv.

Eastern Europe, Here We Come!

My in-laws are serving in the Kiev, Ukraine temple on a mission and Joe and I are excited to take the opportunity to go visit them and some other countries in Eastern Europe.  We had a great time researching and planning our trip and can't wait to visit Ukraine, Romania, and Hungary.

Steph came down on Wednesday, June 5 with her three munchkins in tow to watch our kids while we go to Europe for the next couple of weeks.  Jim is unfortunately out of town with some military training so she is doing this whole thing solo.  I was excited to spend a few days with her before we head out plus I had to give her all the necessary instructions to run my family!

I had to steal these pictures from her blog because she is truly amazing to put up with my crazy kids AND hers for the next two weeks.  But my kids are so excited.  They love Aunt Steph and she admitted that she is excited to "relax, lay out by the pool, and have some fun with my 2 nieces, 2 nephews, my 2 kids and my cute little baby."  :)
Wait...that's 6 kids and a baby!  7 kiddos ranging from ages 13 to 3 months!  That means I'm going to be making meals for 8 people 3X a day!  7 kiddos I'm going to have to pick up after, one of them I'm going to be doing diaper changes 6X a day for.  Oh, think of the laundry piles!  Not to mention keeping track of all of them and keeping up with the daily schedule of my sister's life and making sure her house is spic and span just the way she likes it!  What am I getting myself into???!!!

Hmmm...is it too late to turn back?  Just kidding!  Let the fun begin!

Isn't she great?  Joe and I left for the airport early on Sunday morning, June 9 around 5:00 a.m.  With our plans to hop trains and move from place to place, we decided to pack our things in backpacks.  They would be a lot easier to carry around than rolling and lifting luggage up stairs, escalators, and across cobble-stoned streets.

Our flight left at 7:00 a.m. and flew to JFK Airport in New York, through Amsterdam, Netherlands, and into Kiev.  The flight was a bit cold but we watched movies, tried to sleep, and enjoyed our meals and snacks.  We arrived in Kiev on Monday afternoon around 1:00 p.m.  We are so excited for this adventure.

Swimming Lessons

We squeezed in a session of swimming lessons for Carlee as the school year ended.  She and her good friend, Addi, took the lessons together.  Carlee is such a little fish and her technique gets better and better every year with Janette's teaching.

Janette teaches the kids to jump in the water with clothes on, learn to tread water while taking them off, and then tying up the sleeves or pant legs to blow air into them to make a flotation device.
Backstroke
Treading water

Diving in for races across the pool
And a little swimming playdate with Addi and Ava to end the hard work of lessons.

Kristy's Baby Shower

My friend, Kristy Dean, was having her first baby so we planned a Hawaiian Luau-themed baby shower for her at my house.  We are so excited to help her welcome a new little girl to her family!
Our refreshments included teriyaki meatballs and pineapple chunks, fruit kabobs,
fresh vegetables and dip, chocolate, vanilla, and Jello pudding cups, and delicious tropical punch.
My friend, Jackie Hathaway, was my planning partner-in-crime
Carlee and Lily Butler were excited to attend the baby shower and were happy to get the presents.
