Graduation
After the ceremony, we went home to get the kids and headed out to Incredible Pizza Company. We had never been here before but it was recommended by some of the other Orthopaedic wives as a fun place. It was great because everything is indoors. We got to play in the air-conditioning! There is an all-you-can-eat pizza and pasta buffet complete with salads, baked potatoes, and dessert choices. There is bowling, mini-golf, bumper cars, go-karts, and video games. Basically, a glorified Chuck E. Cheese with a CiCi's pizza buffet. The food was actually pretty good and the games were fun too. The kids loved it and so did Grandma and Grandpa Stuart.
Field Day
Where is May?
Mother's Day weekend was spent in Las Vegas looking for a new home. Clark, Kate, and Jake were left in Texas with sweet friends and we took Carlee with us. She did very well on the flight but stayed awake the entire time and with the time change, she was exhausted. We arrived Saturday night around 7:00 but spent 2 hours in line getting a rental car. Right before we got the car, Carlee finally fell asleep. So we loaded our stuff in the rental van around 9:30 and headed on our way the 1.5 hours to St. George to stay with my sis. We were starving so we hit the 24 hour McDonald's at the end of "The Strip" and drove along looking at all the sights on the way. Joe and I haven't been to Las Vegas in years so it was fun to talk about memories and all that has changed. It took us about an hour but Carlee was asleep and we figured this was a good time to see it in the dark. We got to St. George about midnight Vegas time and 1:00 a.m. Utah time.
Sunday was Mother's Day and the first time I didn't wake up to breakfast in bed by my children. I missed them especially that day. We went to church with Steph but it wasn't the same. I missed seeing my sweet children up on the stand singing their little hearts out with the "mother" songs. I missed Jake's big grin and thumbs up as he tries to sing all the words but ends up getting distracted and talking to his friends. I missed Katelyn's shy smile and wonderful singing voice getting all the words right. I missed Clark's "I'm too cool to smile at my mom but I'll sing my heart out with sincerity and try not to smile at her" smirk. We had a great morning with Jim and Steph and after a yummy lunch we drove to Vegas to check out the area all afternoon and then headed back that evening.
Monday we started the hunt. We looked at about 16 houses. Most of them were foreclosures and needed a lot of work. We went to a few other ones but it was hard to look past the clutter to actually see the home. We would set up appointments but the homeowners would follow us around the house and wouldn't even clean up before we came! I was amazed and disappointed. It was a very discouraging day.
Tuesday was spent in Henderson. We looked at about 14 houses this day. There were some nice ones but yards were extremely small and it would be a very long commute from the ones we did like. We then stopped in Logandale on our way back to St. George and visited with some great friends and went to dinner. They took us on a tour of Logandale and convinced us to look at homes there even though it is also a far commute. They are so happy there and we would love to live close to them.On Wednesday we really liked one particular house and were thinking of putting an offer in but found out there were 6 other offers on it so we didn't want to compete. We also looked at another home that had my favorite floorplan and a half-acre lot. We were so excited from the front door and then we walked into the kitchen . . . It was gutted. Some of the top cabinets, bottom drawers and doors, the island, dishwasher, sink, and parts of the butler's pantry were missing! I was so sad. Two of the upstairs bedrooms were also missing carpet. It would have been the perfect house but we would have paid too much to buy it and then even more to make it liveable. We also checked out some new homes that are being built and they were pretty nice but, again, no yard for our children to play. We looked at about 6 more this afternoon.
By the evening, we were sick of looking at houses and just wanted to relax. We checked into a motel for the night and then went out for dinner at Claim Jumper in a really great outdoor mall. It was fun. Carlee had a blast just walking around and looking at things and we enjoyed just being with her. We then went to bed early for our 6 a.m. flight home. Although we came home feeling a little disappointed and empty-handed, we do know the area a little more and have time to continue our search.
Jacob had his end of the year program for preschool on the 17th. His class sang a couple of songs and he did great. He has really enjoyed this year and loves his teachers, Miss Kim and Miss Rose. He was lucky enough to go to school with his best buddies, Mitchell and Brayden, too. He finished off his year the week before Memorial Day with a pizza party on Tuesday and a water party on Thursday. He had a great time and is out for the summer!
Clark had his piano recital on May 23. His teacher was Brooke Jardine and we are going to miss her. She was a great teacher and Clark did well. He has a great ear for piano and can often play the songs just by hearing them. Unfortunately he needs to sight read a little more but we are going to work on it over the summer. Clark enjoys playing the piano and has a great talent for it. We will miss Sister Jardine and appreciate all of her hard work and patience with Clark.
Memorial Day was spent having a traditional breakfast at the Guenther House downtown. The kids ate up their waffles and bacon and we toured the museum and enjoyed walking along the river. We had a 45 minute wait for breakfast so the kids passed the time posing for pictures, playing "Mother, May I?" and "Red Light, Green Light". After our yummy breakfast we went miniature golfing at Malibu again. Unfortunately we weren't as lucky as the last time but had a wonderful time anyway. When we walked through our back door that afternoon, the phone rang and it was a house showing in 20 minutes so we ran through the house for any touch-ups and jumped back into the car. We decided to get some ice cream and go to Target to look (not buy) at toys. When the hour was up we headed back home to get ready for the next week and the beginning of the end . . . of school.

My Man
Joe and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary on Sunday, April 27. We spent it driving home from Dallas, unpacking, putting kids to bed, reading blogs (me), and writing a presentation (Joe). This is what our life has turned into and . . . we wouldn't change it for the world. Looking back on the last 10 years has really been a blur. We have been very fortunate and blessed in our life together. We have been through a lot and all of it good. We have four beautiful children, graduated from college and medical school, moved 3 times, bought our first home, bought 3 cars, sold 1 car, been through several church callings, met many wonderful people, built lifelong friendships, and are 5 weeks away from graduating Residency and enduring another move.
I can't believe it's been 10 years. In some ways I feel like it's been 20 and in others I feel like it's been 2. I still get excited for him to come home. I look forward to our date nights and his phone calls during the day. I still dress to impress him. I still get embarrassed when I make mistakes or act goofy because he might think less of me or wonder who he's really stuck with. I still worry about him when he is late or travelling. I still love to hug and kiss him. I still love to hold hands and feel his arm around my shoulders. I still love the way he makes me laugh. It can only get better from here and I can't wait!
His name: Joseph, Joe, Babe, Honey
How long have you been married: 10 years
How long did we date: 1 year
Who said I love you first: He did in a letter over the summer when he was in training
Who sings better: We're pretty even but probably him. I get extremely nervous singing in front of people but I can carry a tune. He has all the confidence in the world and can really belt it out.
Who's smarter: Definitely him, at least in book smarts but I've got street smarts and that rates higher, in my opinion
Who does the laundry: I do
Who sleeps on the right side of the bed: I do
Who mows the lawn: Joe
Who cooks dinner: I usually cook during the week but he steps up when we grill or for Sunday dinner. He loves making Sunday desserts the best. He is a great cook and the best at steaks. I love when he cooks.
Who drives: He does
Who's more stubborn: It definitely depends on the situation. We are pretty even here as well. We agree on almost everything and if we don't, he'll think about it and give in.
Who kissed who first: He definitely made the first move but our first kiss was pretty goofy and not very good. Long story . . .
Who asked who out first: It was a blind date
Who proposed: He did but I ruined it. We had been ring shopping and picked out "the one" but I didn't know that he had it yet. We went to dinner with our parents to discuss the wedding plans and then we were walking around the temple and I mentioned that this would have been the perfect setting. He then got down on one knee and proposed. I cried, of course, but felt terrible because I ruined it. He said it was great because he was so nervous and didn't know how to just get down and do it so I made it easier for him. Whatever, I'm a loser!
Who has more siblings: He has 5, I have 4
Who wears the pants of the family: Again, we're pretty even. We understand what's important to each other and compromise. He is definitely more relaxed and laid back and I have to keep on top of him when it comes to cleaning, organizing, and tasks but he doesn't mind and likes me to make job lists for him. Hmmm . . . His dad says he is hen-pecked so maybe I do?!
How old is he? 33
Who eats more? Definitely him
Who is taller? Joe is the perfect height for me.
Who pays the bills? I do
Who is more sensitive? Me, of course. He never cries! He never shares his feelings and if he does, it sounds like he is feeding me a line. No sentiment or sensitivity for Joe. Too studly!
Happy Anniversary, honey! Looking forward to 10 more years together! Love you forever!
Headed to the big D, and we do mean Dallas
Joe always says, "A zoo is a zoo is a zoo" but he had fun anyway. (At this point in our lives, we do it for the kids) The kids were so excited to see all of the animals and Clark took pictures of every breathing thing in every cage.
They also had a fun "children's zoo" section where the kids could slide, climb, crawl, and splash. There was a stream that ran through the middle with big climbing rocks on both sides. All of the children took off their shoes and socks to walk and splash in it. Since I hadn't brought any changes of clothes, I gave the kids a leg boundary where they couldn't get wet. Clark and Kate did fine, for the most part. Carlee was maneuvered away from the water every time she got close but Jake was another story. Apparently he took my words to mean, "Sit down in the water and kick your legs on top so the water doesn't get too high up your leg." Needless to say he was soaked to the bone and loving every second of it. He would run up and down the stream kicking and splashing everyone. There were some parents herding their kids away from him but others just smiled. Obviously with kids and water together, nobody is safe. Jake was so wet that Joe called him over to wring out his shirt. As soon as the shirt was off, so was Jake. He ran around the whole park singing, yelling, splashing, and showing off his "muscles". When he was done, he had to have his shorts wrung out as well and then he was ready to go. We went back to change and then headed to the Galleria mall.

4 year old Logic
These were a couple of pretty funny conversations with Jake the other night during our bedtime ritual . . .
Mom: Jake, you need to have a bath tonight.Jake: No, Mom.
M: Yup, you haven't had one for a couple of days and tonight's a good night.
J: What do I smell like? (He is smelling his arm)
M: Dirt and sweat.
J: Nope. I smell like roses. I don't need one.
M: Jake, you don't smell like roses. If you did, I would be able to smell you from over here.
J: Mom, I really do. I smell like roses so I don't need a bath.
Dad (yelling from downstairs): Jake, you don't want to smell like roses. Roses are girly. Do you want to smell like a girl?
J: Okay, I'll take a bath.
After his bath . . .
Mom: Jake, let's go brush your teeth.
Jake: I already did.
M: No, son, Mom needs to do it at nighttime.
J: I want Dad to do it.
M: He's not here so it's my turn.
J: I already did it.
M: Jake, you made the deal with me that I brush your teeth at night and you brush them in the morning. It's nighttime.
J: Mom, that was the old Jake. This is the new one.
M (laughing): What?
J: That was the old Jake. I am the real one and that is not the deal.
M: Yes, that is the deal. You made it and we are sticking to it.
J: I ask the questions around here.
M (laughing again): Well, you can choose to let me brush your teeth or let the dinner bugs eat at them all night and one day you might wake up without any teeth and you'll smile like this (I smiled folding my lips over my teeth looking really goofy--a little exaggeration, I know)
J (laughing): Okay, my bad. You can do it. But I get to do it in the morning.
M: Okay.
J: By the way, Mom, can you change my name to Sonic? That would be awesome.
M: No, it's already on your birth certificate as Jacob.
J: How about Jacob Sonic Stuart and you can just call me Sonic?
M: Well, why don't we leave your name like it is and sometimes we can just call you Sonic for fun when you are running really fast?
J: Okay, thanks, Mom. That's awesome!
Mom (thinking to herself): What an awesome creative goofball.

Obsessed
CELL PHONES--she calls them "HLo?" and talks nonstop into them while pointing her finger, laughing and saying jibberish.
"WaWa"-Eggo Waffles, "Bapples", "Cookie", and "Dink"
BABIES--her baby doll and blanket she calls "Baby" and they go everywhere she does and can't be left in her crib. She also loves to kiss and lay on other babies when they are kicking on the floor or relaxed in their car seats.
SHOES and BOOKS--She brings them when she wants them.
RUNNING--It's more like a hip wiggle while swinging her arms but she does that more than walking these days. She runs to the front door everytime it opens for "DaDa" or to the pantry and refrigerator if the doors are left open
Blowing kisses and saying "Nigh-Nigh" as we carry her to bed
DUMPSTER DIVING--She heads to the kitchen garbage for any leftovers I have thrown away
YELLING--"Mom!" when I go up or down the stairs without her, "No, No!" at her brothers and sister when I tell them to come eat or do their chores. She even lectures them when they are disobedient by jabbering and waving her hands around, and "Joe!" when I call for him or he is working outside
"Bite!" every time someone has food
Climbing "Bup" on furniture, stools, beds, chairs, etc. to get what she wants or to be held
And making us smile and laugh all the time with her spunk and darling personality.
Lucky Day
Clark had his first baseball game and did great. He has never played before and has been looking forward to baseball season since school started. He's actually pretty good at hitting and throwing so we convinced him to play this year. From the first practice, he has been so excited to play. During the game, he hit the ball when he was up to bat and made it to first base. Then when he was playing first baseman in the outfield, he caught the ball from the center fielder and tagged the runner but he barely made it to the base in time and was safe. But wow! what a catch. He even got a high five from the other team's coach!
After the game we decided to try a new burger joint called Bigz Burgers. It has a big deck for outdoor dining and an open grassy area for the kids. I think that they will probably add playground equipment in the future. The burgers were huge and greasy. No quarter-pounders there. Joe and the kids ate them up (I couldn't finish mine) and loved playing in the dirt and grass after eating. Those are the kinds of restaurants that we love.
We then decided to go to Malibu Grand Prix for some miniature golf. Malibu is a fun center with arcade games, bumper boats, go-karts, batting cages, and mini golf. It was fairly busy when we got there but this is where the luck began . . . As we stood in line to buy our mini golf passes a woman walked in with a stack of coupons in her hand and gave some to us for free rounds of golf. WaHoo! We love coupons!
Clark had a lot of power in his hit and his ball flew over a few holes so he did a lot of chasing. Katelyn had a gigantic swing but couldn't actually hit the ball to save her life. Joe had to show her that she didn't need to raise her club over her head and swing with all her might. She just needed to be soft and gentle and the club would meet the ball. Jake was multi-talented in his swing. He could swing left-handed, right-handed, hit it like a billiard ball, drag it across the green with his club, and throw it towards the hole. Carlee loved chasing the balls, picking them up and moving them somewhere else, putting them in the hole, running down the little hills, and stepping on the obstacles. All of them were very happy yelling out their scores as they ran to the next hole. Jake was probably the most honest as he turned to Joe with a big grin and a thumbs up and said, "Dad, I got 14 on that one!"
After playing we went into the arcade. Clark is so lucky when it comes to these games. He wins every time. The last time we played at Sea World, Clark won a huge lizard, and about 6 little stuffed animals so of course, the arcades are his favorite and he gets so excited to play. Clark immediately went over to the stuffed animal claw game. He won a dog, but wanted Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog. He tried to get it but it dropped last second so he tried again and won. Jake was immediately in tears because he wanted it but Clark got the last one. Jake kept wailing and crying so Clark was a sweetheart and gave Jake all of the tickets he had won in Skeeball so Jake could pick out a prize.
Meanwhile, Joe went to the token machine and put another dollar in just to get a few more tickets for Jake when out comes about 30-40 tokens! He gathers them up and takes them to the counter and explains what happened and the employee says, "Well, since you're so honest, just keep them and give them to your kids." So of course, they have to play until all the tokens are gone. Katelyn won 150 tickets on some game in one shot and then Clark won the Jackpot on another game and scored 1550 tickets! It was so insane watching all of those tickets come out of the machine into a huge pile on the floor. Everyone was looking at him and some kids were freaking out over it. Anyway, Clark and Kate decided to pool all their tickets and then Jake could get something really great but there were so many tickets that they all got something great! Clark got a dartboard, Katelyn got some fancy Disney princess jewelry, and Jake got a hot wheels race track. Joe and I decided that Clark is the lucky token in our family and we are definitely taking him to the casinos when we get to Vegas!
On the car ride home, Clark said, "This is the best day ever! It's almost like Christmas!" The kids were so happy and thankful for such a great day and Joe and I were surprised and thankful that we only spent $5 when were expecting to pay a lot more.
Later that night, when Joe was tucking Clark into bed, he said, "Dad, this was my luckiest day ever!" Joe agreed and then Clark said, "But Dad, your luckiest day was when you married Mom." Of course, Joe agreed again. What a charmer!
